GST Slabs in India

GST was simplified to two main slabs from 22 September 2025. The Government of India announced the change as "next-generation GST reforms" (PIB press note on the 56th GST Council meeting: standard rate 18%, merit rate 5%, 40% for a select few goods and services). Always confirm the rate for your specific item in the official notification.

GST RateWhat it means
NilExempt or nil-rated items
5%Lower slab, including many goods that were earlier at 12%
18%Standard slab, including many goods that were earlier at 28%
40%A small set of specified demerit and luxury goods

CGST vs SGST vs IGST

For intra-state supply (within same state), GST is split equally between Central (CGST) and State (SGST). For inter-state supply, the full GST is collected as IGST by the Centre. Example: 18% GST on intra-state = 9% CGST + 9% SGST.

How to Calculate GST

Adding GST: Total = Original × (1 + GST%/100). For ₹10,000 + 18% GST = ₹11,800.

Removing GST: Original = Total ÷ (1 + GST%/100). From ₹11,800 inclusive of 18% GST: ₹11,800 ÷ 1.18 = ₹10,000.
