Every university notifies its own conversion formula. This table lists the formulas used above, with their official source.

Example Conversions

CBSE: a CGPA of 8.6 gives 8.6 × 9.5 = 81.7%. VTU (2015-2018 scheme): a CGPA of 8.20 gives (8.20 − 0.75) × 10 = 74.50%. Anna University: a CGPA of 8.20 gives 8.20 × 10 = 82.00%. The same CGPA converts to three different percentages under three universities - which is why the university must be selected first.

Why There Is No Single Universal Formula

CGPA is a weighted grade-point average, not a direct record of marks, so each university decides how to express it as a percentage. Universities also change their rules: KTU, for example, replaced its earlier conversion with CGPA × 10 by a 2023 university order. If your university is not listed, use the custom multiplier from its latest notification, or ask its exam cell.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I convert CGPA to percentage?
A: There is no single universal formula - each university or board prescribes its own. Select your university above, enter your CGPA, and the calculator applies that institution's official formula. Common ones: CBSE uses CGPA x 9.5 (indicative), Anna University and KTU use CGPA x 10, and VTU's 2015-2018 schemes use (CGPA - 0.75) x 10.

Q: Is CGPA x 9.5 correct for every university?
A: No. The x 9.5 multiplier is CBSE's indicative conversion for Class 10 and Delhi University's CBCS rule. Many universities use a different formula - for example Anna University uses CGPA x 10 and VTU's older schemes use (CGPA - 0.75) x 10. Always use the formula notified by your own university or board.

Q: What is the CBSE CGPA to percentage formula?
A: CBSE's official FAQ and Circular No. 24/2010 state: Overall indicative percentage of marks = 9.5 x CGPA. CBSE calls it an indicative equivalence, not an exact marks figure. It applies to CBSE Class 10 mark sheets that show a CGPA.

Q: What is the MAKAUT CGPA to percentage formula?
A: MAKAUT, West Bengal publishes an official grade-point table, not a formula: 6.25 = 55%, 6.75 = 60%, 7.25 = 65%, 7.75 = 70% and 8.25 = 75% (minimum assured marks) on the 10-point scale. For a grade point outside these five values, ask your college or the MAKAUT exam cell.

Q: Is the percentage from this calculator official?
A: It is computed exactly with the formula your university has published, so it matches what the university's own conversion gives. For job applications, visas or admissions, some institutions ask for an official conversion certificate from your university - check what the receiving institution requires.
