Simple estimate, not your total tax: the interest earned over the whole tenure is taxed once at the slab rate you picked. It leaves out the 4% health and education cess, any surcharge, and year-by-year tax. TDS is shown only as the bank deduction and is not netted against this figure. The yearly after-tax return follows from that. Your actual tax depends on your total income and the interest credited each year.

Comparing FD offers

FD rates depend on the bank, the tenure, the deposit amount and whether the depositor is a senior citizen, and banks revise them often. Take the current rate for each tenure from the bank itself, enter it above, and compare the maturity amounts side by side.

How to Calculate FD Interest

FD uses compound interest: A = P × (1 + r/n)^(nt), where P = principal, r = annual rate, n = compounding periods/year, t = years. Quarterly compounding (n=4) is standard for most Indian bank FDs.

Example: Rs 1,00,000 invested for 1 year at 7% per annum with quarterly compounding (n = 4): A = 1,00,000 x (1 + 0.07/4)^(4x1) = approx Rs 1,07,186. Interest earned: approx Rs 7,186. This illustration uses these stated assumptions only - compounding frequency varies by bank and FD product, so check your bank's terms. Tax and TDS are not included.

TDS on FD

If interest earned in a financial year exceeds ₹50,000 (₹1,00,000 for senior citizens) from FY 2025-26, banks deduct 10% TDS. If you are eligible for receiving interest without TDS, you can submit a declaration in Form No. 121 (section 393(6) of the Income-tax Act, 2025; rule 211 of the Income-tax Rules, 2026).

Tax Saver FD

5-year Tax Saver FDs qualify for Section 80C deduction up to ₹1.5 lakh. However, interest is fully taxable. These are best for people who want guaranteed returns with 80C benefit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is FD interest taxable in India?
A: Yes. FD interest is fully taxable as \'Income from Other Sources\' at your income tax slab rate. Unlike PPF, FD does not enjoy any tax-exempt status, so higher earners (20-30% bracket) will pay more tax on FD returns.

Q: What is TDS on Fixed Deposit?
A: Banks deduct 10% TDS if your annual FD interest exceeds ₹50,000 (₹1,00,000 for senior citizens) from FY 2025-26. If you are eligible to receive interest without TDS, you can submit a declaration in Form No. 121 (section 393(6) of the Income-tax Act, 2025).

Q: What is the difference between cumulative and non-cumulative FD?
A: Cumulative FD reinvests the interest along with the principal, and you receive the total amount at maturity (suitable for wealth building). Non-cumulative FD pays interest at regular intervals — monthly, quarterly, or annually — providing regular income (suitable for retirees).

Q: Is FD safe in India?
A: Yes. Bank FDs are covered by DICGC (Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation) insurance up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank. PSU bank FDs are considered the safest; small finance bank FDs offer higher rates but with slightly higher risk.
