About Horsepower

Horsepower (hp) is a unit of engine power. 1 mechanical HP (550 ft·lbf/s) = 745.6999 watts, and 1 metric horsepower (PS) = 735.4988 watts (NIST SP 811, Appendix B.8: NIST). The calculator rounds these to 0.7457 kW and 0.7355 kW. The formula used here: kW = Torque (Nm) x RPM / 9549.3.

What is the difference between bhp and torque?
BHP (brake horsepower) is engine power — relates to top speed and high-speed performance. Torque (Nm) is rotational force — relates to initial acceleration, towing ability, and low-speed pulling power. Diesel engines typically have high torque but lower bhp; petrol engines have high bhp and revving ability.
How to convert kW to bhp?
1 kW = 1.341 bhp. So a 100 kW engine = 134.1 bhp. Conversely, 1 bhp = 0.7457 kW. A 120 bhp engine = 120 × 0.7457 = 89.5 kW.
