What makes a strong password?

Length matters most. NIST SP 800-63B-4 requires services to ask for at least 15 characters when a password is the only login factor (8 when it is used with a second factor), and says services should not force mixes of character types (NIST). The character-type options here exist because many sites still require them. Avoid dictionary words, names, or dates, and use a unique password for every account. The strength indicator is a rough length-and-variety heuristic, not a security guarantee, and it does not follow the NIST rule above.

Password Manager Tip

You only need to remember one master password if you use a password manager (Bitwarden, 1Password, or KeePass). Generate a different strong password for each site and let the manager store them securely.
