Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight. It applies to adult men and women and is widely used by doctors as a quick screening tool. BMI = weight(kg) ÷ height²(m).
BMI does not directly measure body fat. Athletes with high muscle mass may have a high BMI despite being healthy. It also does not account for age, ethnicity, or fat distribution. Always consult a doctor for a complete health assessment.
Studies suggest that South Asians (including Indians) tend to have higher body fat at lower BMI values. Some health experts recommend a healthy BMI range of 18.5 – 22.9 for the Indian population.
